Preferred Physicians Medical (PPM) is a national medical professional liability insurance provider, and an insurance industry innovator in providing anesthesia-specific insurance, patient safety and risk management strategies.

Responsibilities and Duties

We need a professional to handle moderate to high severity medical malpractice claims, including the following:

  • Analyze applications for determination of applicant acceptability.
  • Supplement application information through: financial, MVR and legal reports; contact with applicant's past supervisors and other associates; conversations with applicant; and peer review.
  • Properly price and quote acceptable risks.
  • Reunderwrite risks using established criteria.
  • Decline risks when not found acceptable.
  • Represent the Company by telephone, in writing and in person where appropriate.
  • Keeps up to date relative to the medical malpractice insurance marketplace and legal changes that might impact underwriting practices.
  • Makes recommendations for improvements in coverages, forms and work flow.

Qualifications and Skills

Skills Required:

  • Knowledge of liability insurance principles. Indepth knowledge of mechanics and ramifications of a liability insurance contract. Knowledge of medical malpractice principles. Ability to analyze information obtained and make a sound underwriting decision based upon that analysis. Ability to communicate with insureds, applicants, supervisor and support personnel. Ability to determine relative importance of underwriting information obtained. Ability to ascertain when additional, more comprehensive information in particular areas must be obtained in order to make sound underwriting decisions. Ability to recognize quirks and irregularities and follow up appropriately. Ability to identify positive and negative trends. Ability to creatively extract pertinent information from the Company's databases to reach decisions based upon factual and complete information.
  • General knowledge of personal computer and ability to perform data entry in the narration of underwriting file activities.
  • Possess the organizational skills to manage and prioritize a multi-task position. Possess interpersonal skills necessary to successfully interact with Company staff.

Education and/or Experience Required:

  • Bachelor's degree (B.A. or B.S.) and ten (10) years of related experience in property and casualty underwriting with company and/or agency; or equivalent combination of education and experience. CPCU or other insurance courses, or present work towards designation may be substituted for educational requirements. Requires an insurance property and casualty producer license in individual’s state of residence within six months of hiring, which must be maintained and current throughout employment.
